The origin of many of the world famous fairytales such as Cinderella, Rapunzel, Snow White etc are often associated with the Grimm Brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm. The brothers didn't actually write many stories such as Cinderella, they actually existed long before they were even born, and used to be told as household stories passed down from generation to generation. But, as industrialisation began to take root, customs and traditions changed and these household stories were slowly losing their place in the home. Jacob and Wilhelm decided to set on a little quest to stop these stories from becoming extinct, and interviewed many house maids and relatives in order to pluck out what they could from each story, sometimes adorning the stories slightly (although they claimed they didn't) and later in 1812 published all stories in the book "Kinder und Hausmärchen" (Children's and Household Tales).
Originally however, the stories were not intended for kids. Many of the original tales included sex, violence, rape, incest and copious footnotes. In the original story for example, Rapunzel gets pregnant after a casual fling with the prince, and in Cinderella the step sisters cut off part of their foot to fit into the glass slipper. These graphic scenes were then revised and tweaked when the stories began becoming popular among the children.
Thanks to their popularity among children in the 18th and 19th Century, Walt Disney then began a few adaptations of his own based on these fairytales. Some of the stories his company adapted were Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Snow White etc. Most of the time Disney's adaptations have a much happier ending, for instance the princess is rescued from the tower in "Tangled", which is the adaptation of Rapunzel, rather than follow the original story where she winds up pregnant by a one-night stand with a prince. Another adaptation for instance is where Sleeping Beauty is awoken by the kiss of a prince, rather than the child sucking the poisonous spindle out of her finger (she was raped by a prince in the original story and wound up pregnant).
Disney's adaptations are renowned for their Happily Ever After endings, despite originally ending rather differently. They are now still part of our cultural DNA, but mostly thanks to the latest adaptations by Disney, rather than the original tales by Jacob and Wilhelm.

Truth, Fantasy or Fiction
For my A2 exam unit, I was given the theme of Truth, Fantasy or Fiction. After having read my exam paper a few ideas sprung to mind, some more obscure than others. I seemed to be fixating more on the idea of fantasy, I thought this was quite vast to play around with. I also liked the idea of creating something fictitious, or maybe bouncing fiction and fantasy off of each other.
Naturally the first thing that came to mind when thinking of doing something to do with fantasy was fairytales. I thought of maybe recreating well known fairytales such as Snow White or Alice in Wonderland and combining them with modern day, for instance Snow White being hooked to an Apple iPhone as opposed to a real apple, or Alice in Wonderland falling through a rabbit hole but instead of being surrounded by clocks and furniture, you could perhaps see the pair of headphones she's dropped or her phone falling out of her hand. This was only an initial idea, I didn't want to go with it straight away. I thought I needed to give myself more time to come up with various new ideas in order to show some more development in this unit. I may eventually come back to this idea and at least play around with it, but we'll see.
For Fiction, I came up with the idea of optical illusions. I thought this was also quite vast to play around with and a few little ideas came to mind while I was thinking about it. For instance I could do a little experimentation with different perspectives, such as having someone stand far away and make them look tiny whilst someone stood closer looks like a giant next to them. I could perhaps use this idea as one of my initial shoots, while I figure out what it is I will want to be doing.
I don't seem to have been drawn in by the idea of Truth all that much. Unlike the other two themes I had no ideas spring to mind quickly and I had no inspiration with it. I forced myself to think of a little something to at least have some extra ideas but nothing really came to mind apart from one. I had the idea of photographing different meals, and the people eating them. I thought I could find someone who was underweight, and photograph her dinner plate, revealing the truth behind what she really eats. I thought of doing the same with someone overweight, and someone who's physically very fit. But then I thought this might offend some people, and I don't really know anyone who's underweight and I don't have access to anyone who is quite overweight either.
